When we took out the Trident, the first thing we noticed was just how much float it actually has—this board is a game-changer for anyone 250+ lbs who has struggled to stay in the pocket. It’s a very easy, intuitive ride. Running it as a thruster (tri-fin) makes it incredibly stable, which is perfect for beginners or anyone wanting to lean into a massive bottom turn. If you want to get a little rowdy, dropping the center fin and riding it as a twin-fin gives you a fun, loose surf-style feel for slashes. For the guys who want to skim, riding it as a single-fin leverages that sharp rail and massive surface area to make learning surface 360s surprisingly easy. Just a heads up: while it spins great, shuv-its are a bit of a workout on this board simply because of its size.

Phase 5 Trident vs Phase 5 Model X - Which is better for big riders? +
Both boards handle weight well, but the Trident is a dedicated skim-style hybrid with a longer outline and thinner rails. The Model X has a wider swallowtail and more of a "surf" feel. If you want a longer, stable board that you can still spin like a skimmer, the Trident is the better "big guy" option.
What is the best fin setup for a 250 lb beginner on the Trident? +
Start with all three fins (the Thruster setup). This provides the most stability and tracking, making it much easier for larger riders to get up and find their balance. Once you are comfortable carving, you can remove fins to experiment with different riding styles.
Can you learn 360s on a board as big as the Trident? +
Yes! In fact, the large surface area makes it more stable during the rotation. By riding it as a single-fin, you reduce the grip in the tail, allowing the board to break free easily for surface spins. It’s one of the best platforms for big guys to master their first 360.
