Water Ski Package Selection FAQ

Q1: How do I know which water ski package is right for me and what size?

Choosing the right slalom water ski package comes down to your weight and your skiing style. For ease, we have included specific size charts on each ski package product page to help you find the correct length for your weight. Boat speed determines the shape of the ski: slower skiers benefit from a wider ski for added lift, while faster, more aggressive skiers look for a narrower ski with enhanced bevels for sharper turns. For more details, see our Water Ski Buyer’s Guide & Size Chart.

Q2: Should I choose a double boot or a rear toe plate in my package?

When picking out a water ski package, we always recommend sticking with what you know. If you have always skied with a Rear Toe Plate (RTP), staying with that will make your transition to a new ski much smoother. If you prefer the locked-in feel and leverage of Double Boots, choose a double-boot package. If you are stuck in between, stay with whatever you have been using successfully in the past.

Q3: What are the best beginner water ski packages?

The Radar Session and Radar Union (available for both Men and Women) are the gold standard for beginners. These are considered beginner slalom water skis because of their wider nose and tail. This design provides maximum ease of getting up out of the water and unmatched stability as you learn to cross the wake.

Q4: What are the differences between the 3 tiers of slalom ski packages?

Radar designs their water ski packages to match your progression and boat speed. For a deep dive into each model, check out our guide on the Best Water Skis of 2026.

  • Beginner (Session and Union): Optimized for boat speeds of 24-28mph. Focused on ease of getting up out of the water and stability.
  • Intermediate (Senate Series / Lyric Series for Women): Optimized for 28-34mph. Perfect for open water or those looking to transition into the course.
  • Advanced (Vapor Series): Optimized for 34-36mph. Built for aggressive open water or course skiing.
Q5: Is my water ski package ready to ride out of the box?

Yes. Every slalom water ski package purchased from Wakesports Unlimited is pre-assembled by our expert staff. We mount the bindings and hardware to the factory-recommended settings before it ships, so you don't have to worry about the setup once it arrives.

Q6: How have water skis changed over the years?

Modern water skis are significantly lighter than they were 10 or 20 years ago. Because of the weight of the ski, the biggest learning curve is your stance. You will want to favor roughly a 50/50 weight distribution across your feet, rather than leaning back and being back-foot heavy like you did with your old ski. This balanced position allows the modern ski to track better and turn more efficiently.
