It's built like a tank with the GatorSkin glass layup, so you can slash hard and shove it all day without worrying about stress cracks or heel dents ruining your investment

Ideal vs. Wrong Riders

Phase 5 Matrix Wakesurf Board 2026

The Ideal Rider

Intermediate to advanced skim riders who want a dedicated trick board that thrives on surface spins, shuv-its, and riding switch. Perfect for the surfer who wants maximum agility and responsiveness.

The Wrong Rider

Beginners who need a stable, forgiving cruiser to just hang onto the rope, or pure surf-style riders who prefer deep, heavy-carving ocean lines.

The Wakesports Crew Review

We got the 2026 Matrix out behind the boat, and the first thing you notice when you drop the rope is how lightning-fast this board is. If you're looking to step up your skim game, this thing is built to perform. Thanks to the thinner 5/8" core and boxy rails, it sits right where you want it in the water line, giving you instant responsiveness when you lean into a turn or set up for a spin.

What really stood out during our sets was how cleanly it rides switch. The symmetrical outline means it feels exactly the same riding backward as it does forward, which takes a lot of the clunkiness out of landing 180s or full 360 variations. It has an incredibly crisp, poppy release off the lip due to that carbon stringer. It doesn’t feel spongy or sluggish at all; it just reacts exactly when you tell it to.

FAQ'S: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between the Phase 5 Matrix and the Phase 5 MVP? +
It comes down to outline and riding style. The Matrix features a completely symmetrical shape, making it the superior board for riders focused heavily on switch riding, shuv-its, and technical spin variations. The MVP has a more directional, pulled-in tail which offers slightly more tracking and speed going forward. Choose the Matrix if you want total freedom in both directions.
What does GatorSkin™ glass actually do for the ride? +
GatorSkin is a blend of carbon and aramid fibers that makes the board extremely stiff and strong. On the water, this translates to zero "flex loss"—meaning every ounce of energy you push into the board goes directly into generating pop or speed. It also means it resists heel dents better than traditional fiberglass setups.
Can I ride the Matrix if I’m a larger rider? +
Yes! The Matrix goes all the way up to a 56" model which handles riders up to 225 lbs. Because the high-tech GatorSkin layup keeps the board stiff and fast, larger riders won't experience the sluggish "dragging" feel common with lower-end, high-volume skim boards. If you are above 225lbs, we'd recommend the Phase 5 Hammerhead 58" or the Phase 5 Model X 57".
Why does the Matrix use a 5/8" thin core instead of a thicker profile? +
The 5/8" thickness drops your center of gravity closer to the water. This gives you a more sensitive, intimate connection to the wave, allowing for sharp rail changes and faster rotations. Thicker boards offer more raw float, but thin cores offer unmatched precision.
Is the single 1" fin hard to stay in the wave with? +
A single 1" fin is the skim standard. It provides just enough tracking to hold a line when carving up the face, but releases effortlessly the moment you want to spin. If you find yourself slipping out of the wave initially, focus on keeping your weight on your front foot to utilize the board's rails for speed. If you want a more stable ride, check out the Phase 5 Key V2 or you can always buy a 2" fin to make the Matrix more stable.
