Why You’ll Love the Phase 5 Scamp Kid's Wakesurf Board 2026

The 2026 Phase 5 Scamp is the ultimate grom-sized board. It's built for the smallest riders on the boat to gain confidence and start carving. The Scamp is thin and light, using a thruster 3-fin setup to give kids the stability they need to find the "sweet spot" and stay there. It’s the perfect entry point into the Phase 5 family, ensuring the next generation of "shredders" starts with the right equipment.

Ideal vs. Wrong Riders

Phase 5 Scamp Kid's Wakesurf Board 2026

The Ideal Rider

A perfect beginner starter board for young groms who have never been on a wakesurf board before. It's also the ideal choice for groms ready to drop the rope, learn to carve, and intermediate riders attempting their first surface 360.

The Wrong Rider

Teenagers or adults who exceed the 120 lb weight limit, or kids who want a heavy, surf-style "cruiser" with large fins.

The Wakesports Crew Review

We put a few of our youngest test riders on the 2026 Scamp and the results were instant smiles. We added a 70lb grom rider who was just learning, and the board helped him pop right up on his first few tries. We also had a 90lb grom just cruising in the sweet spot, doing some fun bottom turns and slashes on the wake. This is a great all-around beginner to intermediate board that will not hold your kids' progression back and will set them up for success. Because it’s so thin, they can actually engage the rail without needing a ton of body weight and the tri-fin setup gives them the "grip" they need to feel stable while learning.

Product Overview

The kids Phase 5 Scamp Wakesurfer uses a wide stable profile that carries the right amount of momentum to stay in the wave. The thin ½” skim style core provides exceptional float and maintains excellent rail sensitivity for the lighter rider. The tri-fin setup is configured with our 2” Skim Fin in the center and Fakie 1” Skim Fins on the sides. This fin configuration locks the Scamp into the wave with plenty of drive and helps it turn on a dime. The Phase Five Scamp Wakesurfer is a great starting platform for young riders and is built with durable Composilite™ material to handle the bumps and dings of everyday boat life.

FAQ'S: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Phase 5 Scamp vs. Phase 5 Shrimp - Which Wakesurfer should I buy for my kid? +
The Shrimp is the ultimate "starter" board for tiny groms under 100 lbs who are just learning to stand up. The Scamp is the next step. It’s slightly larger (45") and has a more advanced Tri-Fin setup, making it the better choice for kids who are ready to drop the rope, start carving, and learn their first tricks. If your child is already comfortable standing up, or is approaching that 100 lb mark, go with the Scamp.
Does the Tri-Fin setup make the Scamp hard to turn? +
Actually, it makes it easier! While a single fin can feel a bit "slippery" for a kid, the Tri-Fin configuration (with the 2” center and 1” Fakie sides) gives them the "grip" they need to lean into a turn without the board sliding out. It locks them into the wave and provides a stable platform for building confidence in their carves.
How long will my child be able to ride the Scamp before outgrowing it? +
The Scamp has a weight limit of up to 120 lbs. Because it’s built with a high-performance skim shape, it’s not just a beginner board—it will grow with them. Most kids will ride the Scamp for several seasons, moving from basic carving to surface 360s, before they finally need to step up to a pro-model like the Phase 5 Mindset or Key Jett Shreds boards.
Is the Scamp durable enough for kids to handle on their own? +
Yes. Phase 5 uses Composilite™ construction for the Scamp specifically because kids are tough on gear. It’s designed to withstand the typical "grom life" dings—like hitting the swim platform or being dropped on the dock—much better than a fragile, high-end carbon board.
Can my child learn to do a 360 on this board? +
Absolutely. The Scamp is the #1 board for learning spins. The thin 1/2" profile makes it very easy for a lighter rider to rotate. Once they are ready to try a 360, you can even remove the two side fins to make the board feel "skatey" and easier to spin, effectively turning it into a pro-style skimmer.
