Stay Safe: USCG Approved Life Vests, Impact Vests, and Kids' Life Jackets
Safety is the number one priority on the water. Our comprehensive Wake Vests Collection features the industry's best flotation and protection gear, categorized clearly to meet your needs. We carry two primary types: legally required on the boat for each passenger Coast Guard Approved (CGA) Vests and flexible Impact Vests for more maneuverability and comfort while riding. Ensure every member of your family is protected with the right gear.
CGA Vests vs. Impact Vests: Understanding the Difference
CGA Life Vests are mandatory on the boat for every person in most boating situations. They are specifically designed to keep the wearer afloat, often turning the user face-up in the water. These are essential for beginners, children, or those who may not swim well. In contrast, Impact Vests (or Comp Vests) are slimmer, non-approved flotation aids designed primarily to absorb high-impact falls and offer maximum mobility for wakeboarding and wakesurfing tricks, as well as for waterskiers. Even though impact vests are NOT a substitute for USCG approval, they do provide minimal floatation for riders. ***NOTE*** You are able to wear an impact vest, while most people prefer it for comfort, while behind the boat as long as there is a Coast Guard Approved Vest on the boat for that person.
Kids' Safety and Proper Sizing
For children, safety is non-negotiable. All vests in our Kids' Vests Collection are Coast Guard Approved and feature crucial elements like leg straps and grab handles for our infant/toddler and child vests. When selecting any vest, sizing is key: a vest must fit snugly but comfortably to prevent it from riding up when in the water. Always check the vest's weight rating and size chart before purchase.
Frequently Asked Wake Vest Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What is the difference between a Coast Guard Approved (CGA) vest and an Impact Vest?
A Coast Guard Approved (CGA) vest is designed with maximum flotation and three points of contact for safety. Impact Vests (also known as competition vests) are lighter and more comfortable, but they are less buoyant than CGA vests. Impact vests are not necessarily "advanced" vests; they are simply designed for more flexibility and comfort during active riding.
Q2: Is it legal to wear an Impact Vest while riding?
Yes, it is legal to wear an impact vest while riding as long as there is a CGA-approved life vest on the boat for every person, including the rider or skier. Always check your local state laws, but generally, the boat must carry the appropriate number of approved flotation devices for everyone on board.
Q3: How should a wake vest fit?
Our rule of thumb is: if it zips, it fits! Modern wake vests are designed to be form-fitting and very snug, similar to a wetsuit top. You want to avoid "shoulder straps above the ears." These vests are meant to stretch and will loosen up 10–15% once you get in the water.
Sizing Tip: Since every company and every vest fits differently, we recommend you check the size charts on each product page. We provide the specific size chart for that particular vest to help ensure you get the perfect fit.
Q4: Do you carry wake vests for kids and what brands do you stock?
Yes! We carry a wide selection of vests for Men, Women, and Kids. For children, we exclusively carry CGA-approved vests to ensure maximum safety. We stock premium options from the industry's top brands:
Q5: Why are some vests more expensive than others?
Pricing typically reflects the materials and construction. Higher-end vests often feature 4-way stretch neoprene and specialized lightweight foam that allows for better movement. Brands like Follow and Ronix invest heavily in these materials to ensure the vest doesn't restrict your motion while you are wakesurfing, wakefoiling, wakeboarding, or waterskiing.
