Wake Vests FAQs

Confused about CGA vs. impact/comp vests? We break down the differences and help you choose the right vest for wakeboarding, wakesurfing and other watersports.

Q: What’s the difference between a CGA vest and an impact/comp vest?

A: CGA (Coast Guard Approved) vests are safety-certified and required in many areas. Impact/comp vests are lighter and more flexible but not coast guard approved. CGA vests are meant to save your life in case of an emergency where impact vests will not but do provide some floatation.

Q: Which vest is best for wakesurfing or wakeboarding?

A: Many riders prefer impact vests for comfort and flexibility, but CGA vests are required for safety in most states for kids under a certain age. Check your local boating laws. You MUST have a CGA life vest in the boat for every passenger including the rider. CGA vests are also required for wave runners and jet skis.

Q: Do you carry vests for kids?

A: Yes. We offer Coast Guard Approved (CGA) vests designed specifically for kids, ensuring safety and a secure fit on the water. Kid's vests go based on weight ranging from Infant (0-30lbs), Child (30-50lbs), and Youth (50-90lbs).

Q: Are impact/comp vests Coast Guard Approved?

A: No. Impact/comp vests are non-CGA for flexibility and comfort. Choose CGA life vests when certification or maximum flotation is required.

Q: How should a life vest fit for wakeboarding or wakesurfing?

A: It should be snug like a compression shirt or wetsuit top—no gapping or riding up when you lift your arms. A secure, close fit keeps the vest in place during starts and falls. Please note: If it zips, it fits as these vest loosen up 10%-15% over time with more use.
