Water Ski FAQs

Do you have questions about shopping for water skis? We've got answers to common queries.

1. What size water skis should I buy?

As you might expect, there's no definitive answer to this critical question. The size of the water skis you'll need will depend on your weight, skill level, and the type of water skiing you plan to do. In general, beginners should opt for longer and wider skis, which provide more stability. More experienced skiers can choose shorter and narrower versions that offer improved maneuverability. Beyond these factors and manufacturer-imposed weight limits, there's some personal preference involved as well.

2. Do water skis have weight limits?

Yes, but they'll vary by style and manufacturer. In general, those under 200 pounds should have little trouble finding a water ski that they can safely use. Some types, particularly combo or slalom skis, can support individuals up to 250 pounds. Heavier individuals may need to seek out specialized or custom water skis, while those approaching 300 pounds or more may struggle to find equipment suitable for them. On the flip side, children or other lighter people under 100 pounds will also need to look for smaller water skis designed for their bodies. No matter your weight, staying safe requires only using water skis that are sized appropriately.

3. What are the different types of water skis?

Water ski buyers have a few different types of water skis to choose from, each geared toward a different style of skiing or kind of water skier.

Combo Skis: Combo skis are a popular choice for beginners. They're sold in pairs and offer both stability and versatility, allowing riders to learn how to get up and transition from two skis to a single ski.

Slalom Skis: Slalom skis are sold as a single ski with two bindings. They're tapered in shape from a wider front to a narrow rear, which is used to turn or slow down during slalom.

Children's/Junior Skis: For children aged 2-10, starting with combo skis like the Radar Firebolt Combo Water Skis is a popular choice. These skis are designed with a V-Bottom for maximum stability, making it easier for young learners. As they progress, they can transition to specialized kid's slalom waterskis. These skis boost confidence with features aiding technique development.

4. What are some good water ski options to learn on?

Generally, most beginner water skiers should start with combo skis but it is not uncommon for people to jump directly into slalom skiing. Combo skis are the easiest to get started with and help develop confidence on the water as skiers learn the basics. They can also be equipped with retainers or stabilizer bars for added support. As riders learn the basics, they can then progress onto slalom water skis.
