Wakesurfing FAQ

What wakesurf gear do I need to get started?

At minimum, you’ll need a wakesurf board, a wakesurf-specific rope and handle, and a properly fitting life vest. Many riders also use wakesurf bags to protect their boards and fins. We’ll be breaking this down in even more detail in our blog “Best Wakesurf Accessories 2026 | Ropes, Vests, Fins & Bags.”

What’s the best speed for wakesurfing?

Most boats surf best between about 10–15 mph, depending on the boat, ballast, and rider preference. The goal is a clean, well-shaped wave with enough push to keep you in the pocket without washing out. We’ll cover dialing in boat speed and wave shape in “How to Set Up Your Boat for Wakesurfing (2026 Guide) | Ballast, Speed & Wave Shape”

Do I need a special rope for wakesurfing?

Yes. Wakesurf ropes are shorter (25ft) and have a different handle design than wakeboard ropes to keep you closer to the boat and out of the prop area. They often feature knots or sections to help you pull into the pocket and then toss the rope safely. You’ll find more tips in our “Ropes & Handles Explained: Wakeboard, Wakesurf & More” blog.

I’m brand new to wakesurfing. Where should I start?

The best place to start is with a stable surf-style board, a dependable CGA life vest, and a patient driver who knows how to set a clean wave. We’ll walk through everything from getting up to basic tricks in our “How to Wakesurf: Step-by-Step for Beginners” and “Wakesurf Board Buyer’s Guide 2026 | Size Chart & How to Choose.”
